Dallas Public Library
The Dallas Public Library is a great resource for reading all year long, even when school is closed. All Dallas residents may get a free library card to check out books, DVD's and VHS tapes, and access the internet. Click on each link to learn more.

Online Books
These are books that are read on the computer using an internet connection. Many of these stories are read aloud to you or have animations to go along with the story. They are highly interactive and fun to read! Click on each link to learn more.

Dallas Public Library offers free library cards to anyone who lives in Dallas. This card can be used to check out books, videos, and access the computer. To receive a library card you will need:
Adults:
- Driver's License or other ID card
- Proof of residency - utility bill, updated/current driver's license, or lease agreement
- Must be with Legal guardian
- Dallas ISD ID# or school registration paperwork
Ebooks are books that you read on the computer. You need an internet connection in order to access these books. These books are good for independent readers although some do have a read aloud feature. To read these books......

For SORA
1. Log in to SORA using your student ID# and last four digits of student ID
example: username: 1234567; password: 4567
2. Choose a book seen on the landing page or you can search do a title, author, or keyword search.
3. If the book is "IN" you can check it out. Click on the word "Borrow" in blue. Reading online is immediate.
4. If the book is "OUT" you can place it on hold or add it to your wish list to read at a later time.
For Follett Shelf
1. Select Pershing, John J. from the drop down list.
2. If needed, log in to Follett Shelf using your student ID# and last four digits of student ID
example: username: 1234567; password: 4567
3. Choose a book. You can search using a title, author, or keywords. Click on the book of your choice.
4. If the book is "IN" you can read it online or check it out. Reading online is immediate but your bookmarks will not save. Checking the book out will save your bookmarks so that you can start reading in the story exactly where you left off.
5. If the book is "OUT" you can add it to your wish list to read at a later time.

This website offers children's books read aloud by members of the Screen Actor's Guild. Many of the actors reading include famous stage and screen actors including James Earl Jones, Elijah Wood, and Hector Elizondo. Many of the stories are award winners or classic children's books. You need a computer or tablet (ipad or other) and internet access in order to listen and watch these stories.

This website was created by a mom in Canada who wanted to encourage her children to read more. This is a great place to record the books and amount of time spent reading. Parents and/or Teachers can set a specific amount of reading time as a way to earn incentives. When students read a certain number of minutes they can then access fun educational games that are loaded on the website.
To get started, sign up for a free account. There is no cost involved.

PBS Kids is sponsored by the Public Broadcasting System Kids shows and includes characters from their much-loved series. The games are sorted by skill type (reading, math, spelling, etc.). This link takes you to the PBS Kids reading games.
Funbrain is an educational games website sponsored by Pearson, a well-known name in educational materials and testing. Games include all skill areas. This link takes you to the funbrain reading games.
ABCYA is an educational games website that is well-known for games that increase both reading and math skills as well as spatial reasoning and problem-solving. The games are divided by grade level rather than skill level. This link takes you to the main page. Hint: Sometimes you need to choose a lower or higher grade level depending on your skill level.
This is a free educational website dedicated to helping children learn how to read and improve reading skills. A variety of games and activities are available to practice important reading skills. This link will take you to the main page.
